Watch this presentation about the tour for the Toronto Latvian Pensioners’ Association with Laura Adlers and Thomas Burton:
This tour was about more than simply music. It was about culture, language, identity, education policy and so much more. The experiences were inspiring and galvanizing.
Thank you, Laura, for planning a tour of such breadth of experiences for all.
The Adlers Agency’s 2025 Latvia-Estonia Choral Tour was an enriching and inspiring immersion into the vibrant choral traditions of these Baltic States. This meticulously curated journey offered an unparalleled breadth of exposure, revealing the depth and passion that defines the Latvian and Estonian choral scenes.
Our itinerary was more like a masterclass in cultural engagement, encompassing intensive rehearsals, captivating performances, insightful tours of esteemed music schools, and an unforgettable visit to a rural choral festival. Each experience deepened our understanding and appreciation for the region’s unique musical heritage.
A particular highlight, and indeed a privilege, was the opportunity for tour participants to reciprocate this cultural exchange by sharing our own profound passion for Canadian choral music and discussing contemporary trends within our national scene, thereby fostering a meaningful dialogue, bridging musical traditions across continents.
Beyond saying it was thrilling, wonderful, awesome – traveling to a new place, with a different culture and language, always presents challenges, but problem solving, reaching out, getting along with others – accomplishing these things on the road brings great rewards.
This tour was an eye opening and extremely valuable cultural and musical experience for me. Laura’s expert planning and vast connections allowed for us to experience the best of what Latvia and Estonia’s choral communities have to offer. The tour group was welcoming and an inspiring representation of Canadian choral music and I enjoyed creating deeper connections with my Canadian colleagues, as well as forging new friendships with many Baltic musicians. I would highly recommend this experience to any choral enthusiast looking to expand their horizons!
This unforgettable 10-day tour was a deep dive into the heart and soul of Baltic choral traditions, offering an immersive experience into how deeply music is woven into the cultural fabric of Latvia and Estonia, where choral music is not just an art form, but a way of life.
THANK YOU to our tour partners!
I am most grateful to my friend and colleague Aira Birziņa, who helped me develop the program and connect with our many choral partners over the course of the last year. PALDIES, Aira, for everything you did to make this tour a success!
PALDIES Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Music Academy for being our official partner for this tour.
We greatly valued the opportunity to sit in at final conducting exams, meet with your faculty and your Rector Ilona Meija. We were especially pleased that Dr. Timothy Shantz presented to your faculty and students about Contemporary Canadian Choral Music and Truth and Reconciliation, followed by a reading session of Canadian choral music with Tim, John Wiebe and Thomas Burton and the JVLMA choir.
PALDIES to Director Ġints Ceplenieks and the Rīga Cathedral Choir School.
Tim presented his second lecture and another reading session with our Canadian delegates. We really enjoyed attending the Rīga Cathedral Boys’ Choir and Rīga Cathedral Girls’ Choir TIĀRA rehearsals as well!
A special THANK YOU to Daugavas Vanagi Kanadā (The Latvian Relief Society in Canada) and LNAK (Latvian National Federation in Canada) and the “Līvija Jansonas un Leonarda Skreituļa LNAK Nākotnes Fonds”. With their support, we were able to purchase Canadian repertoire for the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Music Academy’s music library and to hire a videographer to document our choral adventures for promoting future tours.
THANK YOU to Kravis Travel and Bubbles & More for working out the travel and accommodation arrangements so seamlessley!
AITÄH to Ingrid Kõrvits for helping me create the program in Estonia and for recommending we see the phenomenal production of “Macbeth”, which needs to be seen around the world!
PALDIES and AITÄH to the many organizations and colleagues we met with on the tour.
Thank you for your time and insight into the unique choral culture and traditions of Latvia and Estonia. Thank you for inviting us into your rehearsals and concerts. These memories stayed with us throughout the tour and inspired very important and meaningful conversations. Several of my colleagues told me this was “the trip of a lifetime”!
We will never forget all that we experienced.
We want our colleagues to learn about your choral traditions as well. My heart is full.
